God Appointed First of All Apostles

I Corinthians 12:28-31 - And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way.

When it comes to spiritual gifts, none are more important than any other, but some are more essential to the life of the church.  As we know, a body cannot live without a heart, but it can live without an arm.  It just won't function as well.  In the same way, the church can't live without apostles, but it can live without those speaking in different kinds of tongues.  It just won't function as well.

Some questions for thought:

If God appointed apostle as the most essential gift in the life of the church, do you know what that gift is and how it is supposed to function?
